The Frank Howard Thomas, Jr. '38 and John Atlee Light Thomas '40 Scholarship

The Frank Howard Thomas, Jr. ’38 and John Atlee Light Thomas ’40 Scholarship was established in 2011in memory of Frank Howard Thomas, Jr., Class of 1938, and John Atlee Light Thomas, Class of 1940, by their sister, Eugenie A. ‘Genie’ Havemeyer, a founding member of the Kirkland College Board of Trustees and Hamilton College Life Trustee.


F. Howard Thomas, Jr. ’38 graduated from Hamilton with a Bachelor of Science  degree. During his time on College Hill, he was a member of the football and track teams, participated in the Charlatans and won the McKinney Prize for declamation. Howard entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, receiving his M.D. in 1942. His internship at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia was followed by service in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps. In 1940, he married Madeline Foster and they had one son, Frank Howard Thomas III. In May 1950, F. Howard Thomas, Jr. died from polio at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

John Thomas ’40, whose preferred name was Jack, also graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a member of Hamilton’s varsity football team, receiving the Richard S. Fowler Football Award, presented to the team’s most valuable player, as well as the men’s basketball and track teams; served as freshman class president, rush leader for Theta Delta Chi and vice president of the Intramural Council; and was active in the biology club. Elected to Quadrangle and D.T., he also followed his career on the Hill with enrollment at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his M.D. in 1950, fulfilling his residency at Philadelphia’s Presbyterian Hospital. Prior to attending medical school, Jack served four years of wartime duty in the Naval Air Corps. He married Tanya Hoedt in 1951 and the couple moved to Denver. In December 1962, Jack, his wife and their two young sons perished when fire consumed their home. Their daughter, Tanya Diane, nine years old at the time, was raised by Genie Havemeyer and her husband, Harry.
