The Coleman Burke Scholarship
The Coleman Burke Scholarship was established in 1986 by Coleman Burke, Class of 1934 and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Mary Poston Burke. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who has demonstrated strong academic ability, broad-based extra-curricular involvement, and potential for a leadership contribution to the Hamilton community.
Coleman Burke was a former managing partner of the law firm of Burke and Burke, benefactor and Chairman Emeritus of Hamilton’s Board of Trustees. During his years as an undergraduate on the Hill, he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and thrived in both academic and campus leadership roles: he served as Honor Court president and captain of the men’s varsity basketball team. He was also elected to Quadrangle, DT, Was Los, Pentagon, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Following Hamilton, Mr. Burke went on to Harvard Law School, where he received an LL.B. in 1938. A successful lawyer, he maintained his commitment to alma mater, serving as a member of the NYC Alumni Council and, eventually, as president of that group. He was also Chairman of the 1946 Alumni Fund and a member of the Alumni Fund Executive Committee. He continued his passion and involvement with the Hamilton Community until his death in 1999.
