The Valone Family Scholarship
The Valone Family Scholarship was established by Frank H. Valone, M.D., Class of 1970 to honor his late wife Judy Valone and to honor three generations of his family to graduate from Hamilton, including his father, Richard J. Valone, M.D.’43 and his son, Frank H. Valone, III, M.D. ’03.
This fund was established by Frank H. Valone, M.D., Class of 1970 to honor his family members who have attended Hamilton. His father Richard J. Valone, M.D. was a member of the Class of 1943 and his son Frank H. Valone, III, M.D. was Class of 2003, as well as the fourth generation of their family to become a medical doctor. The fund was also established to honor Judy Valone, Frank’s late wife, who mentored many young women and men.
Richard J. Valone ’43 received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo and was an ophthalmologist who practiced in Utica and later in Arizona. He was married to Jean H. Fredelake and they had five children including Frank ’70, the eldest. The Valones endowed the Richard J. and Jean F. Valone Scholarship that is awarded with preference given to students who are planning a career in medicine.
Frank H. Valone ’70 earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He devoted his career to research on boosting the immune system to fight cancer and other diseases. He held research and teaching faculty positions at various medical schools including Harvard, University of California-San Francisco, Dartmouth and Stanford. He eventually assumed leadership of clinical research at biotechnology companies including Dendreon, Bayhill and FibroGen. He and his late wife, Judy, have three children Justin, Frank and Elizabeth.
Frank H. Valone III ’03 received his medical degree from George Washington Medical School. After completing training in spine surgery at the University of California-San Francisco and Washington University, he established a spine surgery practice in San Francisco.
