The Joan Hinde Stewart Scholarship
The Joan Hinde Stewart Scholarship was established by members of the Hamilton Board of Trustees, alumni, parents and friends of the College to recognize and celebrate Joan Hinde Stewart’s 13 years of service as President.
This Fund was established by members of the Hamilton Board of Trustees, alumni, parents and friends of the College to recognize and celebrate Joan Hinde Stewart’s 13 years of service as Hamilton’s 19th President. Stewart was the first woman to serve the College in this capacity in its 200+ year history.
The first in her family to earn a college degree, Stewart graduated summa cum laude from St. Joseph’s College in 1965 and received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1970. She is the recipient of fellowships from Yale University, the National Humanities Center and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has been a fellow at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France, a visiting scholar at Oxford University in England, and a fellow at the Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Letters in Bogliasco, Italy.
Stewart’s own experience as a “first-gen” student led her to champion the cause for need-blind admission at Hamilton. Colleges that are need-blind pledge to make admission decisions without considering an applicant's ability to pay. Stewart noted that without financial aid, she would have been unable to attend college. Ensuring that future generations of potential Hamiltonians had unfettered access was deeply personal for her. Hamilton’s Board of Trustees followed her lead and adopted a need-blind admission policy at its March 2010 board meeting.
In addition to championing need-blind, Stewart’s tenure as Hamilton’s President was marked by tremendous growth, including an investment of nearly $250 million in new and renovated facilities for the sciences, social sciences, studio and performing arts, student activities, and fitness and recreation.
