The T. James Bigham ’82 Scholarship
The T. James Bigham ’82 Scholarship was established by Anne Bigham Hutchins, Kirkland Class of 1978, and John S. Hutchins, Class of 1975 in memory of Jake Bigham.
This fund was established by Anne Bigham Hutchins K’78 and John S. Hutchins ’75, parents of Katharine C. Hutchins ’12, in memory of Mrs. Hutchins’s brother T. (Thomas) James “Jake” Bigham, Jr., a member of Hamilton’s Class of 1982, whom they remember as a terrific father, creative architect, rugged outdoorsman and great friend.
Jake Bigham died in 2007 while pursuing one of his passions, windsurfing, in extreme conditions. He is survived by his wife Judith O’Connor and three daughters Raina, Louisa, and Idabelle.
Jake Bigham prepared for college at the Salisbury School. He entered Hamilton as a member of the Class of 1982, earning his degree a year later in 1983. During his time on College Hill, he served as photography editor for The Spectator (1981-82) and was recognized as the winner of the William Gillespie Prize in Art, “awarded to a concentrator in art who excels in that subject,” at Class and Charter Day 1983. He went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Oregon School of Architecture and subsequently established practice in Portland and the Columbia River Gorge.
Please note: The named scholarships profiled on these pages support the College’s generous need-based financial aid commitment. These donor-funded scholarships help ensure the Hamilton promise of keeping education affordable through meeting a student’s full demonstrated financial need.
