The Howard and Charlotte Comrie Scholarship

The Howard and Charlotte Comrie Scholarship, established in 1974 through the Charlotte Comrie Trust, is awarded with preference given to a student of Greek nationality or origin who is a graduate of Athens College in Greece.

Howard F. Comrie, Class of 1922, was born in Johnstown, New York. He entered Hamilton in 1918, where he studied English, history, and French, and was a member of the varsity track team. After graduation from Hamilton, he earned his master’s degree in French art and history from Harvard University. From 1929 to 1940, he taught English at Athens College in Athens, Greece, and then later taught at Northwood School in Lake Placid and Friends Central School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1951, he married Charlotte G. Perrins. She studied art and painting in England before coming to the United States. Both Howard and Charlotte had a strong interest in helping students attend Hamilton and were active and generous supporters of the college. They were residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Ocean Point, Maine, and spent summers in Caroga, New York. They both died in 1993.
