The Christine C. Carey Memorial Scholarship
The Christine C. Carey Memorial Scholarship, established in 1999, is awarded with first preference given to students from Lansingburgh High School in Troy, N.Y., and second preference given to students from the surrounding New York counties of Rensselaer, Schenectady and Albany. This scholarship was established by James Carey, Class of 1971, in memory of his wife.
Christine Carey, a former high school business teacher and devoted mother of three, was the wife of James Carey, Class of 1971, and a longtime friend of the College. Both Christine and James grew up in Troy, New York. She graduated from Nazareth College with a bachelor’s degree in education, and later earned a master’s degree from Iona College. James and Christine were married in 1972 in the Hamilton Chapel. Christine was well-known and admired for her gardening talents. She died in 1999.
James Carey is an accomplished Chicago-area businessman and CPA. He graduated from Hamilton in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in Latin and earned an M.B.A. in accounting from Rutgers University in 1972. He is the owner and president of Basswood Ventures, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in geriatric health care. James is a loyal and enthusiastic alumnus, serving as a volunteer for the Alumni Council Executive Committee, the Annual Fund and several capital campaigns.
