The Gordon J. Barnett Memorial Scholarship
The Gordon J. Barnett Memorial Scholarship was established in 1976 in memory of Gordon J. Barnett, Class of 1920.
Born in New York City, Gordon J. Barnett served briefly in the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1925, he moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida, where he became involved in the local fern industry and soon thereafter opened a fernery.
He also began a housing development, advertised as an artists and writers colony, where residents could, in Barnett’s words, "not only realize their artistic dreams, but could also find a market for their creative productions in a more lucrative way than they now do, while leashed to the grindstone of necessity." The development was called Fern Park Estates and each lot included its fernery.
The Gordon J. Barnett Memorial Foundation was established in 1955 for "religious, charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes or the prevention of cruelty to children or animals." Gordon passed away in 1976, and the Gordon J. Barnett Memorial Scholarship was established that year at Hamilton in his memory.
