The 2016 Ramsay Family Scholarship by Roderick McKay Ramsay ’61
The 2016 Ramsay Family Scholarship by Roderick McKay Ramsay ’61 was established through the estate plan of Roderick McKay "Rod" Ramsay, Class of 1961. Mr. Ramsay desired that recipients of this award consider themselves as members of his extended family and, as they are able, emulate his commitment to alma mater.
A diligent and disciplined student, with a strong work ethic, Rod Ramsay focused on his studies at Hamilton and lettered in three sports, soccer, hockey and lacrosse. He also coached and refereed, with impartiality, intramural sports. Integrity is the characteristic he values most.
He excelled as an officer in the U.S. Navy (1961-1965) and in his banking career (1965-1982). Upon assessing his accomplishments, reflecting on the exceptional Naval captains and managers for whom he worked and focusing on his past experiences as a coach and mentor, he began what he came to describe as a “joyous career in executive search and coaching.”
Rod found his greatest satisfaction in assisting recent graduates and mentoring them on their life journeys. He contributed over 3,000 hours as President of the Northern California Alumni Association, served as a volunteer for the Annual Fund, and Priorities and 175th Anniversary Capital Campaigns, as well as for the Admission Office where, by the time he completed his final volunteer year, he took pleasure in having a total of 40 students admitted from northern California. He worked with the Worldwide Admission Volunteer Effort recruiting students, interviewers and parents for Hamilton. He was proud to be a “Continuous Continental,” never having missed a year as an Annual Fund donor, supplementing this endowed fund so that it may provide full-tuition scholarships for the selected recipients, and establishing two other scholarships, The Hall Family Scholarship honoring the Hall family of Tiburon, California - J. Bruce Hall ’58 and Kathleen Kearns (K.K.) Hall ’94 - and The Sunshine McCoy Stein ’93 Scholarship recognizing Sunshine Alexis McCoy Stein ’93.
Rod desired that recipients of The Ramsay Family Scholarship consider themselves as members of his extended family and, as they are able, emulate his commitment to alma mater through yearly contributions to the Annual Fund and to the Ramsay Family Scholarship, until such time as they establish their own scholarship.
