Organic food scrap waste generated in Hamilton dining facilities are segregated from landfillable solid waste by Bon Appetit personnel during food prep (pre-consumer) and following consumption (post-consumer) in white bins.
Food scrap wastes in the white collection bins are then consolidated in a composting hopper located outside of Commons Dining Hall, to await handling by the Physical Plant.
In September 2014, students conducted a Weigh the Waste campaign to raise awareness of the amount of edible food waste produced on campus. After finishing their dinner in Commons, students were directed to dump their food remains into edible and nonedible waste containers. Over the course of five days, it was calculated that 4,667 people produced 401.3 lbs of edible food waste. This same amount could have provided one person with 100 days worth of food!
