The Crossroads Community Mural Project Vandalism - Student Arrest

Tags Public Statements

Hamilton Community:

As you may be aware, on Thursday evening, October 10th, the Crossroads community mural project was vandalized. Hamilton conducted an investigation and a Hamilton College student, Adyn Brenden, class of 2027 from South Dakota, was identified as a suspect in the vandalism and defacing of college property with hate speech. Brenden was taken into custody by the New York State Police (NYSP) without incident. The NYSP interviewed Brenden, and have reported that he admitted to the vandalism and hate speech graffiti in a statement. He is charged with one count of Aggravated Harassment 1st Degree (a class “E” felony). Brenden was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Kirkland Town Court on October 15, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. According to the assessment by the NYSP this student acted alone, his alleged actions were not associated with any campus group, and there remains no current threat against students or faculty at Hamilton College.  Brenden is not currently in attendance at the College.

Hamilton College is grateful to the NYSP and Campus Safety for their work together in response to this situation. Hamilton College is committed to maintaining a safe campus free from bias acts, discrimination or harassment, where students have full access to their education and where all people are treated with respect.

The messages that defaced the Crossroads community mural project were anti-semitic. We must all denounce anti-semitic speech and hate speech of any kind; reject it with every fiber of our being. I ask everyone to stand together in solidarity and to hold one another accountable for maintaining this extraordinary learning environment free from intimidation.

We take these concerns seriously. To all students, faculty and staff – please report any incident of bias or discrimination or harassment. Please notify Campus Safety or call the police if you ever feel personally threatened or unsafe. And please access support and wellness resources if you feel like you need assistance in any way. I’ve listed contact information and resources below.

Please take time over fall break to rest and reflect. We are working to schedule a second community forum for open discussion and will send further details as they are confirmed.

With care,

Steven
