Dear Members of the Hamilton Community,
I am writing to share the sad news that Alex Egresits, a member of our community for nearly 27 years, has died following a long and determined battle against cancer.
Alex joined the Hamilton paint crew in 1996 after working on campus with an outside painting contractor. He was promoted to paint foreperson in 2007. For many years, he was a regular participant (some would say an immovable force in the low post) in the pickup basketball games that took place during the lunch hour, and he frequently attended Hamilton basketball and hockey games.
His care and attention to the smallest details are evident in the beauty of the campus Alex took pride in helping to maintain. In addition to his regular duties, and until his illness forced him to take a medical leave, he often worked long and nontraditional hours to make certain the College was ready to welcome visitors, especially for special celebrations such as Commencement and Reunions.
Alex seemed to know and connect with everyone. He was hardworking, with a warm and cheerful personality and a perpetually optimistic outlook. You could not help but smile when you were in his presence. Those who knew him best said he invited good-natured ribbing and enjoyed returning it in equal measure. In his note to the Facilities Management team this morning, Mike Klapmeyer called Alex a “beloved colleague and friend” and “a cherished member of our community who touched the lives of many with his kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our shared mission.”
Alex was devoted to his family, and took particular joy in his grandchildren, triplets born a few years ago. On behalf of Alex’s many friends on campus, I extend Hamilton’s gratitude for his service and our deepest sympathy to his family.
