Avery Lum ’22 had big plans this summer to take on a full-time fellowship with otolaryngologist Daniel Roberts ’97 at UConn. Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Instead of taking the summer off, Lum devised a fall-back plan.

Joaquin Pacheco Criado ’23 regularly dedicates himself to using his skills to help others, so it comes as no surprise that he would fill his summer schedule with two internships focused on aiding various communities. Interning for both MAB Learning Coach and Manna Project International, Pacheco Criado spends most of his days working to provide financial and education services to the public.

A longtime commitment to community service has led Maddy Totman ’20 to the next step on her career path — she will join the national service organization AmeriCorps and teach math at Match Charter School in Boston.

After life at Hamilton shifted from the Hill to scattered points around the globe, Community Outreach and Community Project (COOP) put out a call for remote community service volunteers, and some 100 students answered, more helpers than opportunities to help.

HAVOC’s 22nd Annual MLK Jr. Day of Service drew 125 students on Jan. 25 to volunteer in Clinton, New Hartford, Utica, and Rome. Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) is part of the COOP, which oversees community service opportunities.

Eleven members of the Class of ’23 are serving as COOP Service Interns (CSIs) this year. The CSI program is designed for those students who are keenly passionate about service. Students are set up with a two-year paid internship at an area nonprofit. This year’s group is interning at Root Farm, Compassion Coalition, and the United Way to name a few.

As the end of the semester rolled around, students and members of the Hamilton community shared the spirit of giving and enjoyed some festive holiday events.
