Oneida Indian Nation
The Oneida are an American Indian nation, one of the six nations that make up the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) confederacy. It was the Oneida who welcomed Rev. Samuel Kirkland to this area, and it was the Oneida leader Chief Shenandoah who worked with Kirkland to establish the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793 to provide educational opportunities both for Oneida and white European settler youth.
