The Hamilton College volleyball team (1-0) opened its season with a 3-1 win over the Morrisville State Mustangs (0-3) Tuesday night at Morrisville’s STUAC Gymnasium. The victory – in the Continentals’ first athletic contest of 2014-15 – marked the fourth time in five years the volleyball team won its season-opening match.

Hamilton won sets one and two (25-12, 25-21) before the host Mustangs posted a 25-23 win in the third set. The Continentals sealed the win by outscoring Morrisville 25-15 in the fourth.

Jessica Weston ’17 led Hamilton with a career-best 15 kills and Margaret O’Brien ’18 added 10 in her collegiate debut. Weston matched personal-high totals of seven blocks and four service aces, leading the team in both categories.

O’Brien’s six kills in as many attempts led the visitors to a 13-point win in the first set. In the second set, Courtney Brown ’18 – playing her first rotation – served nine straight points to pace Hamilton to a 10-1 lead. She collected three of her four aces during the run.

Kyndal Burdin ’18 finished with 26 assists and seven digs. Anna Brown ’15 led the Continentals with 20 digs and Ivanka Temnycky ’17 added nine.

The Continentals nearly posted a sweep, rallying from a 24-17 deficit to pull to within 24-23 before the Mustangs sealed the win. Erin Donahue ‘17 served six straight points with Weston contributing two blocks and two kills during that stretch.

Donahue collected six kills and six digs. Courtney Brown added six digs. Emma Lonadier ’15 recorded seven kills and five digs.

Hamilton pulled away from a 9-9 tie in the fourth set, taking control by scoring 12 of the next 14 points.

The Continentals return to action Friday with the first of two days of competition at the University of Rochester’s UR Invitational. Hamilton takes on Penn State-Behrend and the host Yellowjackets in Friday’s matches.
