Hamilton College rowers competed in five races at the 2013 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Oct. 26.


The Schuylkill River course is approximately 2.5 miles long with a minimal current. Race conditions were sunny and 40 degrees for the early races with temperatures rising into the mid 50s. Winds were calm at first and built throughout the day to a quartering headwind of 20 mph with higher gusts.

Hamilton finished 14th out of 20 boats in the women's college and open championship eights with a time of 17 minutes, 4.83 seconds. Trinity College captured the gold medal with a time of 15:41.43.

In the women's college and open club eights, Hamilton had a pair of entries. The "A" entry finished 17th out of 40 boats in 17:31.57 and the "B" entry was 27th in 18:02.56. One of Drexel University's boats finished first with a time of 16:18.60.

Hamilton ended up seventh out of 33 finishers in the women's collegiate frosh/novice eights with a time of 16:55.88, which was the best time of the day by any Hamilton boat. Old Dominion University grabbed first place with a time of 15:37.28.

Hamilton was 11th out of 24 boats in the women's collegiate frosh/novice fours with cox in 20:12.37. Drexel took the top spot with a time of 18:13.90. Finally, Hamilton was second out of six boats in the women's college and open pair without cox with a time of 18:55.70. Leah Sorensen '14 and Becca Straw '14 were the rowers in that boat.

The coxswain for the championship eights was Sydney Cantor '16. Sorensen was in stroke seat and Meredith Garner '15 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Straw, Margaret Hylas '15, Keara Lynn '16, Erin Gerrity '15, Ally Kontra '15 and Keara Fenzel '14.

The coxswain for the club eights "A" entry was Heather Piekarz '16. Fenzel was in stroke seat and Nina Byers '16 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Garner, Maddy Maher '17, Amanda Wheeler '17, Grace Bowers '15, Kontra and Gerrity.

The coxswain for the club eights "B" entry was Caroline Harrington '16. Charlotte Andrews '17 was in stroke seat and Lia Parker-Belfer '16 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Kelsie Sausville '17, Hannah Zucker '15, Lily Trapkin '17, Emily Hedison '17, Emily Eisler '17 and Taylor Healy '15.

The coxswain for the novice eights was Devin O'Sullivan '17. Andrews was in stroke seat and Eisler was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Sausville, Maher, Trapkin, Olivia Koster '16, Olivia Surgent '17 and Hedison.

The coxswain for the novice fours was Mariah Walzer '17. Cameron Dunne '16 was in stroke seat and Helen Park '17 was in the bow seat. Michelle Chapman '17 was in 3-seat and Meg Riley '17 was in 2-seat.

The team's fall season is over and they will start rowing again in March 2014.
