Lydia Hamessley, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Music, recently presented “Who Gets Played? Women in Country Music – Then and Now” in a virtual lecture at Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning.
She discussed women’s contributions to country music and the continued struggles of women, as well as BIPOC and queer performers, to be fully included in the country music industry. Musical examples were used to illustrate key points in the discussion.
Hamessley is the author of Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton, published in 2020 by the University Illinois Press.
