Parents of the the Class of 2008 will be honored at a reception and wine tasting from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 of Family Weekend in the Dwight Lounge of the Bristol Center. Two Hamilton families in the wine business, Ursula and Paul Lowerre P'09 and Rosemary and Bruce Cakebread P'10, have generously donated their wines for the occasion. Hamilton's Edward North Professor of Classics (and wine aficionado) Carl Rubino will lead the tasting of a selection from their Peconic and Cakebread wineries.  Executive Assistant to the President Meredith Harper Bonham, who oversees Commencement weekend, will join us to provide a preview of the May 2008 graduation festivities.  To let us know whether or not you are able to attend, please contact Pauline Caputi, 866-729-0314 or pcaputi@hamilton.edu

Peconic Bay Winery

Buds ready to break at Peconic Bay WineryThe Lowerre family purchased the land for the Peconic Bay Winery in Cutchogue, Long Island, in 1995 and, according to the Peconic Web site, it is a strong passion for wine and food that dictates the wines they produce. The Lowerres write, "All of our wines are grown, fermented and blended to emphasize the distinctive fruit flavors of each varietal and the soil in which it was grown, as well as the bright underpinning of refreshing acidity which makes them so food-friendly...we want our wines to win at your table, selected to pair perfectly with your delicious lunch or dinner, prepared from the freshest ingredients. That's a goal we take very seriously, and to which our entire team is dedicated every day, year after year."

For Family Weekend the Lowerres have provided 2005 La Barrique Chardonnay, 2001 Merlot Oregon Hills Reserve and 2005 Cabernet Franc.

Cakebread Cellars in Napa Valley

Cakebread Cellars in Napa ValleyThe Cakebread family has been in the winemaking business in Napa Valley for more than 30 years. According to its Web site Cakebread Cellars has greatly increased in sophistication and knowledge in winemaking. "Years ago, the vines would get one long drink in the spring which was believed to be enough until harvest," Bruce Cakebread P'10, President and COO at Cakebread Cellars, said. "Today, Cakebread Cellars uses a neutron-probe irrigation system which allows us to accurately measure how much water specific vines are using and how much watering is needed to grow better grapes." These improvements allow the Cakebreads to offer their customers a broader selection of wines.

For Family Weekend the Cakebreads have provided 2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay and 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select.
