Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas presented a paper at the 43rd annual conference of Society for Caribbean Studies, University of Central Lancashire, in Preston, England on July 3.
Westmaas evaluated the criticism Caribbean writer, philosopher, and black icon CLR James had offered in the wake of the assassination of Guyanese historian Walter Rodney in 1980. His paper contends that there was no clear demarcation between Rodney’s political-strategic acumen, his personality and political beliefs, and active link with the masses of people. The paper is titled “What do they know of Rodney who only Rodney know?”: CLR James, Walter Rodney’s assassination, and the issue of ‘revolutionary adventurism.’”
