The Hamilton College Departments of Music and Dance welcome parents and siblings to a busy weekend of free concerts in Wellin Hall for Family Weekend. The Hamilton College Choir and College Hill Singers will share a program with the Department of Dance on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Under the direction of G. Roberts Kolb, the Hamilton College Choir and College Hill Singers are set to perform a series of vocal ensembles for full choir and small ensemble.
The dance portion of the program features choreography by Hamilton professors Bruce Walczyk and Elaine Heekin along with guest dancer and choreographer Oliver Wecxteen. Bruce Walczyk presents a new work "A Tale of the Cranes" set to the sounds of "The Brazilian Girls." The piece plays with the characteristics of cranes and a family of the same name.
Lecturer in Dance Richard Lloyd '73 (composition) and Elaine Heekin (choreography) collaborated on "Wind Over Wood", a piece for live music and dance. The wind ensemble Lavender Trio will join the Hamilton Dancers on stage for "Wind Over Wood."
Guest artist Oliver Wecxteen will stage the grand pas de deux and four variations from Act III of the ballet Raymonda. Wecxsteen trained in France and participated in the Prix de Lausanne at the age of 15. He has performed the major principal roles in ballets such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and Nutcracker with Les Ballet de Monte Carlo, Boston Ballet and Les Grand Ballet de Canadians. As a freelance artist, he now performs extensively with national and international companies. Recent performances include San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m., the Hamilton College Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble take the stage for a combined program. Heather Buchman conducts the orchestra for Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 Eroica and Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. Immediately following the HOC, the Jazz Ensemble, led by Michael "Doc Woods, will perform classic swing tunes, big band pieces, some funky numbers, and one or two originals. The concert will feature a number of student soloists.
