Fletcher Malcom and Jennifer McGuire, both members of the class of 2003, are working with Silas D. Childs Professor of Chemistry Robin Kinnel trying to find anti-cancer compounds in algae that may have future pharmaceutical use.  Malcom and McGuire, both chemistry majors, have enjoyed the opportunity to do serious research prior to their senior thesis' projects, which will be completed in the upcoming academic year.

Malcom is participating in the Hamilton Summer Research program for the first time, and wanted to do some chemistry work over the summer in order to experience a job focused on individual research and to better prepare for graduate school or whatever he decides to do next.  Kinnel, Malcom's advisor, has provided a wonderful chance to explore an area of interest independently while providing supervision and expert advise where needed.  Malcom also participated in the Utica Boilermaker road race, running the 15k route was his "perk for the summer."

McGuire has returned for her second summer of Hamilton science research and was happy to return to both the program and her initial project.  McGuire finds the lab experience to be a major advantage during the year, and adds that working in the close knit, fun and friendly chemistry department is anything but boring.  The group has traveled to New York's Yankee stadium to take in a baseball game for the last two years, and frequently have department barbeques, with many non-department friends as invited guests. McGuire looks forward to her upcoming senior year and she will serve for the third consecutive year as a Hamilton Resident Advisor.
