Molly Clark '19 and Gillian Mak '18 at the East Coast Asian American Student Union Conference.

As representatives of Hamilton’s Asian Student Association, Gillian Mak ’18 and Molly Clark ’19 traveled to Raleigh, N.C., to attend the East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU) conference over President’s Day weekend.

As a student on Hamilton’s Program in Washington, D.C,  Mak interns at APIA Vote, a nonprofit with the goal of addressing and increasing Asian American civic engagement that served as a partner for the conference.

The conference, which was based on the theme “Atmosphere,” focused on fostering understanding of the current social climate by examining interdependence between Asian Americans, intersection of issues with other marginalized groups, and interaction with issues beyond the Asian American identity. Attendees participated in issue-based workshops, identity based caucuses, and networking experiences with Asian American advocacy groups.

Students at the conference built connections and shared ideas methods for mobilizing Asian Americans with the intention of bringing change back to their home campuses.
