The Proteus Ensemble
The Proteus Ensemble
The Hamilton College Classical Connections Series ends with the Proteus Ensemble on Friday, April 7, at 8 p.m. at Wellin Hall in the Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts on the Hamilton campus.

Taking its name from a Greek prophet god who was capable of assuming various forms, the Proteus Ensemble is dedicated to breathing fresh life into a wide variety of musical "forms" from the distant past to the present day. The ensemble changes its configuration to perform quartet, trio, duo and solo works in creating eclectic programs that include the classics of the standard repertoire, new music and its own arrangements of Western and non-Western music. The ensemble's enthusiasm for works by edgy young composers such as Thomas Ades and Michael Torke and the skill with which they perform them have won over audiences to the excitement of contemporary music.

Members of Proteus include Jennifer Grim, flute; Gilhad Harel, clarinet; Yuko Naito, violin; Alberto Parrini, cello; and James Johnston, piano. Titled "Paris - Vienna 1900," the Hamilton program features works by Claude Debussy, Alban Berg, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, and Arnold Schoenberg.

Top-prize winners of Chamber Music Yellow Springs and Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Proteus Ensemble made its sold-out New York debut during the 2000-01 season at Carnegie Hall as winners of an Artists International award. In 2001, the Proteus Ensemble was chosen to be the Aspen Music Festival's Contemporary Ensemble and completed their three-year residency there in August 2003. In January 2006 the Proteus Ensemble made its Lincoln Center debut on the "Great Performers" series.

Based in New York City, the members of The Proteus Ensemble have collaborated and performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Ensemble Sospeso, the Norfolk Contemporary Music Festival, and the Minimum Security Composers Collective. They have worked with leading composers such as Joan Tower, Martin Bresnick, Christopher Theofanides and David Rakowski.
