Assistant Professor of Government Kira Jumet explored the motivations behind the Arab Spring in a lecture marking Islamic Heritage Month at Finger Lakes Community College.
She discussed interviews conducted in Egypt during the wave of demonstrations, protests, riots, coups, foreign interventions, and civil wars to show the influence of social media, violent government repression, changes in political opportunities, and the military.
Jumet also examined why Egyptians rose against the Mubarak regime in early 2011 and, two years later, participated in overthrowing their first democratically elected leader.
