Photographs taken by Hamilton graduate Alexis Mann '05 are being featured in this month's issue of Sun Magazine. The Sun, which features black and white photography, creative writing, and poetry, is a competitive medium for both emerging and established artists who endeavor to summon the "splendor and heartache of being human." After graduating Hamilton with a double major in Art and Public Policy, Mann searched for vocational opportunities to develop her knowledge in community building and the technical appliance necessary to build and buttress those municipalities. Mann served as State Liaison to Maine Senator Susan Collins and was responsible for researching local issues and was also staff photographer. Furthermore, Mann was also a member of the Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority, which recently formulated a reuse plan for Brunswick Naval Air Station. Mann said, "I have pursued all of these opportunities to better understand how decisions at the local, regional, and federal levels intersect to influence communities and their residents."
Mann's work has been exhibited at Hamilton's Emerson Gallery, Mills Pond House on Long Island, Space Gallery in Portland and Maine and Visions Gallery in Houlton, Maine. She is currently working closely with the University of Maine's Folk Center in photographing past and present Maine mill workers to help preserve the rich history of Maine mill towns.
