Associate Professors of Economics Ann Owen and Steve Wu published "Is trade good for your health?" in the Review of International Economics. The article investigates the link between increased openness to international trade and health outcomes such as life expectancy and infant mortality.
Owen and Wu find that increased openness to trade is associated with better health outcomes, especially in developing countries. This research is able to find evidence for two possible causes of the positive correlation. First, knowledge about health polices and practice is transmitted between countries that trade goods and services frequently. Second, developing countries that have increased their trade volumes have improved
other macro-level policies that may be directly responsible for better health outcomes.
