The Hamilton College rowing teams hosted their first races of the year on Saturday, facing Rochester Institute of Technology and William Smith College on Rome’s Erie Canal.
The Continentals entered three boats, including their varsity 8, which is ranked fifth nationally. Conditions were extraordinarily windy with chop increasing from moderate to heavy.
The varsity 8 finished the 2,000-meter course in 8:03.67, besting No. 14 Rochester Institute of Technology and No. 10 William Smith, who posted respective times of 8:19.77 and 8:29.45.
William Smith won the second varsity 8 race in 8:43.43, followed by the Continentals (9:21.46) and RIT (9:30.75).
Hamilton’s novice 8 took second (in 10:22.03) to William Smith’s novice 8 (10:02.17) in a race that also included RIT (10:26.21).
The varsity 4 race was canceled because of course conditions.
