Elizabeth Clegg and Betsy Sachs scored in overtime to lift nationally ranked No. 9 Bowdoin College to a 13-11 NESCAC win against No. 13 Hamilton College in Clermont, Fla., on March 22.
Taylor Wilson and Carolyn Gorajek led Bowdoin with three goals and one assist apiece. Clegg chipped in two goals and two assists and Sachs finished with two goals. McKenna Teague added one goal and one helper, and Celeste Swain and Olivia King scored one goal apiece.
Tara Connolly made seven saves, including one in overtime, for the winners. Molly Paduda scooped up a game-high five ground balls and won three draw controls. Wilson and Sachs won three draws apiece.
Rachel Friedman '13 paced Hamilton's offense with five goals and won five draw controls. Kathryn Maiorano '14 and Emily Brodsky '14 scored two goals apiece. Libby Schultz '12 notched one goal and was credited with four assists. Mariah Monks '13 recorded one goal and Katie D'Antonio '14, Ashley Allen '12 and Hannah Hoar '13 picked up one assist each.
Dewi Caswell '14 stopped six shots for the Continentals. Paige Engeldrum '13 collected four ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Meg Pengue '12 added a pair of caused turnovers.
Hamilton (2-4 overall, 1-3 NESCAC) took its only lead of the afternoon at 1-0 with 27:03 left in the first half when Friedman scored unassisted. The Polar Bears scored five of the next six goals for a 5-2 advantage, and led 6-3 at the half.
Monks pulled the Continentals within 8-7 with 16:31 remaining in the second half when she scored on a pass from Allen. Bowdoin responded with three straight goals. King's goal on a feed from Wilson with 13:10 left gave the Polar Bears its largest lead of the day at 11-7.
Hamilton roared back to tie the score before the end of regulation. Schultz started the rally with a free-position goal, and Maiorano scored to cut the Continentals' deficit to 11-9 with 10:48 remaining. Friedman scored from Schultz with 7:00 left, and they hooked up again for the tying goal with just 53 seconds left.
Bowdoin (3-2, 2-1) took the lead for good on Clegg's goal with 4:22 remaining in the extra period, and Sachs added an insurance goal 23 seconds later. Hamilton was credited with one shot on goal the rest of the way.
Both teams finished with 25 shots and 18 ground balls, and the Polar Bears finished with a 15-13 edge in draws. The Continentals scored two free-position goals out of eight chances.
Hamilton plays its first home game of 2012 against SUNY Oneonta in non-conference action on Tuesday, March 27.
