This past Friday I visited the Knitting Factory, a trendy music club located in the heart of the Lower West Side.  I saw John Brown's Body, a funked-out, roots-reggae band that has performed at Hamilton College. The band showcased songs from their new album "Spirits All Around Us," as they fused a new progressive rhythm with the authentic island beats that they have created for years. John Brown's Body continues to amaze me with their ability to resonate powerful yet upbeat lyrics that are indicative of their homage to Bob Marley and Burning Spear, while infusing a fresh ensemble of horns, drum and bass. The band performed a brilliant and exhilarating show with frequent periods of harmonious "jamming," which may be unexpected from nine white boys from Massachusetts. The show was a definite success and I can't wait until I can see them again in late June at the Adirondack Mountain Music Festival.
