Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz, the Margaret Bundy Scott Professor of Comparative Literature, presented a paper titled "Orestes and Oedipus, White and Black: Greek Tragedy and the U.S. Civil War," at the British Classical Association's annual meeting in Glasgow, Scotland on April 4.
The paper addressed the question of why Eugene O'Neill and Rita Dove, both American playwrights of the 20th century, would want to set versions of tragedy in the Civil War. The differences between the white male writing in the first-third of the century and the African-American woman writing at the end provide food for thought.
