Michael Cooney '83 was named Community Champion for his volunteer work in Rochester, N.Y. He was a Russian Studies major and after he graduated from Hamilton he went on to the University of Virginia to earn his J.D. in 1988. He and wife wife, Elizabeth, live in Pittsford with their three children. Cooney is a partner at Nixon Peabody LLP.

Michael Cooney receives honor as part of the Greater Rochester Awards
October 28, 2008 (Rochester, NY) – Nixon Peabody LLP partner Michael Cooney today received the Community Champion Award for his volunteer work in the Rochester area. Mr. Cooney was honored alongside other Greater Rochester Awards recipients at a luncheon at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
In garnering the award, Mr. Cooney was cited for his volunteer efforts on behalf of a range of organizations, as well as his professional position as head of Nixon Peabody's national higher education and exempt organization practice.
His volunteer work for charitable organizations has directly benefitted Catholic Charities, Catholic Family Center, Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning, Funders Alliance of Upstate New York, Junior Achievement of Rochester, Monroe County Bar Association, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Rochester Area Community Foundation, United Way of Greater Rochester and others.
