Hamilton College competed against St. Lawrence University and Union College in separate varsity eight races on the Erie Canal in Rome, N.Y., on April 30.

In the first race, Hamilton's varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:15.95, only 1.44 seconds behind Union. In the next race, Hamilton finished the course in 6:30.2, which trailed St. Lawrence’s time of 6:22.82.

Racing conditions were sunny with temperatures in the 50s. The teams raced against a slight quartering tailwind that built to a direct tailwind of 10 to 15 mph, and gradually increased during the race. 

In the lightweight fours, Hamilton finished first in 6:50.30. University of Rochester placed second with a time of 7:15.20.

Jamie Leiva-Cabrera ’14 was coxswain for the varsity eights. The rest of the boat included Jeff Cardoni ’11 at stroke, Max Geiduschek ’14 in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Chris Visentin ‘12, Aaron Whiteman ‘13, Adam Minchew ‘12, Grant Meglis ‘14, Joe Ely ‘12 and Rafael De La Rosa ‘12.

Jessica Griffith ’13 was coxswain for the lightweight fours. The rowers included Gibson Hoyt ‘12 at stroke, Rob Fagan ‘14 in the bow seat, Dylan Jackson ‘13 in 3-seat, and Matt Poterba ‘12 in 2-seat.

Hamilton rows in the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, May 8.
