Associate Professor of Biology Mike McCormick presented at a meeting of the Dark Energy Biosphere Institute held at the University of Southern California, April 9-11. McCormick discussed the results of a high-resolution survey of the microbial communities and geochemistry throughout the water column and sediments of Green Lake in Fayetteville, N.Y.

Green Lake is a rare class of lake in which the water column is permanently stratified into layers with dramatically different chemistry and microbial populations in each layer (termed meromictic).  The Dark Energy Biosphere Institute is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Research and Coordination Network that helps coordinate and support research into microbial habitats where light is not a dominant energy source.
