The Hamilton College Department of Music presents its annual Jazz Kick-Off Concert on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn.
Professor of Music “Doctuh” Michael Woods, composition and bass, leads an evening of high energy funk tunes featuring some of the area’s best jazz talent. Performing with Woods are Jeff Stockham, trumpet; Bob Cesari, saxophone; Tom Bronzetti, guitar; Tim Witkowski, piano; and Rick Compton, drums. Also performing with the band is special guest Javon Jackson, saxophone.
Returning to Hamilton College after a performance with the Javon Jackson Band, Jackson came into international prominence as a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. As a recording artist, Jackson has appeared on more than 125 recordings. He has also developed a formidable career as a leader, recording and touring throughout the world.
“Doctuh” Michael Woods is the director of jazz studies at Hamilton College. As a composer, he was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and has written more than 500 pieces in all styles.
