Austin Briggs

Austin Briggs, the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English Literature Emeritus, recently participated in the 27th International James Joyce Symposium. Sponsored by the University of Trieste, Italy, the theme of the virtual meeting was “Omniscientific Joyce.”

On June 16, known as Bloomsday to all Joyceans, Briggs chaired a roundtable, which he had also convened. The discussion was devoted to Michael Groden’s memoir The Necessary Fiction: Life with James Joyce’s “Ulysses.” Briggs reports that 114 participants joined the roundtable.
