Maurice Isserman

Maurice Isserman, the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History, presented a book talk to members of the Iroquois Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) on Nov. 1. The event took place at the New Hartford (N.Y.) Presbyterian Church.

Isserman discussed his book Fallen Giants: The History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes (Yale University Press, 2008). Co-authored with University of Rochester professor Stewart Weaver, Fallen Giants is a comprehensive history of Himalayan mountaineering offering detailed, original accounts of the most significant climbs since the 1890s.

The Banff Mountain Book Festival awarded Fallen Giants the 2008 Best Book — Mountaineering History award. The book was also named an Amazon “Editors’ Pick” and received favorable reviews in The New York Times and The Atlantic, among others.
