Jon Hind '80, associate athletic director for operations at Butler University, has been named director of athletics at Hamilton College.
Hind, who will assume his duties at the college on June 1, has a number of ties to central New York. After graduating from Hamilton with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics in 1980, Hind taught math and religion at St. Mary's School in Clinton and served as a part-time assistant coach for football and men's lacrosse at Hamilton in 1980-81.
From 1981 to 1985, Hind was a math instructor and an assistant coach for football, wrestling and boys' lacrosse at Henninger High School. He graduated from the Syracuse high school in 1976. Hind returned to Clinton in the fall of 1985 to teach math at Clinton High School and be an assistant coach for Hamilton's football and lacrosse teams.
"Being an alumnus, the chance to return to College Hill immediately felt like the place to be," Hind said. "I'm very excited to come back and work with a tremendous athletic department at a wonderful institution."
Hind has been working in Butler athletics since 1991. He went to the Division I school, located in Indianapolis, as the program's first head men's lacrosse coach. Hind spent his first two years building the men's lacrosse program, which debuted in 1993, and he suffered just one losing season in seven years. Hind was named National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association after he guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Championship tournament in 1998. Butler won better than 58 percent of Hind's 101 games as head coach.
Hind left coaching to become an athletic administrator at Butler in the fall of 1999. He assumed management responsibilities in marketing and promotions in July 2005, while continuing to oversee the department's event management, facilities and budget. Hind is the administrator in charge of Butler's soccer, tennis, men's lacrosse and women's volleyball programs, as well as the sports medicine department. He chairs the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee and is commissioner of the Great Western Lacrosse League. Hind was Butler's interim athletic director from May through August in 2006.
"I am thrilled to welcome Jon Hind back to Hamilton College," dean of faculty Joe Urgo said. "Jon has more than 15 years of experience as a head coach and an administrator at Division I Butler University, and his background should prove to be beneficial as he prepares to lead the College's athletic department. I would like to thank senior woman administrator Sue Viscomi, who helped make this transition an easy one for all parties involved."
Hind was head men's lacrosse coach at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, from 1986 to 1991. He also served as offensive coordinator and assistant football coach at the Division III school. The men's lacrosse team's record was 22-10 during Hind's last two years with the program.
Hind played lacrosse and football at Hamilton. He was a four-year letter winner and two-time captain as a defenseman on the lacrosse team, and lettered in football as a sophomore. Hind earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Kent State University in 1991. Hind and his wife, Carol, are the parents of two daughters, Kayleigh and Meghan.
