Some play to improve their game, some for competition, but the resounding response as to why we play…because it's fun!

According to Ted Wampfler, athletic grounds foreman, the Hamilton College golf league was formed about eight years ago by three intrepid souls: the late Gina Hibbard, Betsy Espe and Ted. The aim of the league was, and still is, for all members of the College community to get together and play a round of golf without the pressures of most leagues.

For many years, Gina Hibbard led the charge for rounding up those of us who stood on the fringe attempting to decide whether or not we wanted to embarrass ourselves in front of our peers -- including myself.  The community lost this fearless leader on April 2, 2002.  Gina was/is the spirit of this league and many of us feel that she continues to play with us every week.  We gained a new leader in Marylyn Nassimos during the 2002 season.

We gather on the College's course after work, and cover several holes on the course for a "Shot Gun" start of sorts.  According to Ted, who is charged with keeping the course playable and who has played the game for about 18 years, "Overall, the condition of the course is pretty good, although it could use a lot more drainage to dry it up faster.  I know people who play just for fun and others who play that are very serious.  Most players in the league are playing for fun."

Some play for the competition, Women's Basketball Coach Julie Diehl '93 says, "I play because I'm very competitive and I like to torture myself.  However, I also play to get better and for the social aspects."  Julie is one of many in the league who play in other more "serious" leagues in the area.  "I sub at Rome Country Club and Barker Brook.  I've been playing for about two or three years now.  This is my second year in the league."

There are several people who are not only new to the league; they're also either new to the game or returning after not playing for awhile.  Dawn Woodward, academic office assistant, finally joined us this year after a bit of arm twisting.  Judy May of the registrar's office has picked up her clubs again after 22 years.  Lauri Swan from the president's office has also joined us.

We've been very lucky to have Tom Hovey offering free golf lessons once a week for four weeks! Thanks Mr. Hovey!

Players can sign up for the national GHIN system which tracks his or her handicap; weekly 50/50 raffle; and finish up their round with a stop at our very own 19th hole, The Little Pub.  There is no cost to the players unless they want membership in the GHIN system or wish to participate in the 50/50.

For myself, I simply play in order to get outside and pretend I know what I'm doing.  My main goal every time I go out, is to hit at least 2-3 good shots per hole.  Even if the end result is picking the offensive thing up and putting it in my bag!  The big goal for the season is to drive the eighth hole -- now it's in writing and I have to do it!  Julie, can I use your driver?
