The Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund has announced seven grants totaling $35,000 to local educational, public safety and other community organizations in the Town of Kirkland.
The fund has now invested more than $150,000 in the local community since grants were first awarded in 2001.
The Clinton Central School District and the Clinton Fire Department each received $7,500. The district plans to use its grant to continue the multi-year renovation of the playground adjacent to the Clinton Elementary School, and the fire department will use its funds to purchase testing equipment to ensure that volunteer firefighters are airpack-certified.
Grants also were also made to the Kirkland Police Department ($6,500) to conduct an "Evening Policy Academy" for in-service training of KPD and Hamilton Campus Safety officers, the Clinton Central School Foundation ($5,000) to support its Playing Fields Campaign, the Clark Mills Fire Department ($2,000) to purchase a youth defibrillator, and the Clinton Chamber of Commerce ($1,500) for the Second Annual Art & Music Festival.
The Town-Gown Fund also provided $5,000 this year, and committed to an equal amount in 2007, to support Kirkland Ventures, a local economic development initiative. Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart, who chairs the Town-Gown Fund Committee, said the college would provide an additional $15,000 over two years to Kirkland Ventures, resulting in $25,000 for the initiative.
The Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund was established in 2001 by anonymous donors to foster goodwill and better communication between the college, the Town of Kirkland and the Village of Clinton. Since its founding, the endowed fund has received gifts totaling more than $750,000 toward its $1 million goal. Income from the endowed fund is used each year to make grants to organizations in the Town of Kirkland.
In addition to Stewart, members of the Town-Gown Committee include local businessmen John Fehlner of the Clinton Cider Mill and Tom Owens of ACCESS FCU, Mayor of Clinton Gill Goering, Clinton Schools Superintendent Jeff Roudebush, Professor of English Margaret Thickstun, Hamilton alumnus and local businessman Andy Burns, Town of Kirkland Councilman Nick Venero, and Hamilton trustees Amy Owens Goodfriend and Jack Withiam. Goodfriend is a native of Clinton.
Hamilton Vice President for Communications and Development Dick Tantillo and Executive Director of Communications Mike Debraggio sit on the committee as ex officio members.
