Summer for Hamilton students is not just a time to chill out on the beach. Summer internships are becoming more and more necessary for college students, letting them try out areas they might be considering as possible careers, and giving them valuable work experience. Students jump enthusiastically into summer internships in a wide range of fields, from federal regulatory agencies to nature preserve patrols to news stations, working with the professionals in their field and learning skills that they may use for the rest of their careers. Some examples of what Hamilton students are doing this summer:

Peter Woodruff '09 – backcountry ranger patrol crew at the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve

Woodruff has gone to the woods with a vengeance, heading out to what he calls "the inner sanctum of America's 'last frontier,' Alaska." As a member of the five-man team, his work consists mostly of backcountry patrols in the 2.5 million-acre preserve, staying in touch with visitors, enforcing the law, performing repairs, and of course, enjoying the wildlife and the breathtaking surroundings.

Alicia Wright '10 – Next Generation Waters, Big Hug Corporation

Wright is part of a Hamilton trend at the Big Hug Corporation, which was founded by Art Massolo '93. This summer, Wright has helped to launch Next Generation Waters, a functional line of six different flavors of water, by researching marketing arenas and helping to gain exposure for the brand. In addition, the company is working to start a positive news site, and for the last portion of her internship, she has been researching and writing articles.

Sloane Lipkin '11 – intern at the Center for Veterinary Medicine, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

As an aspiring veterinarian, Lipkin is taking the chance to learn about animal medications from a different angle. One of 12 interns at CVM, she goes through the agency's approvals to find the most current labels, checks that the medications are still in compliance with CVM regulations, and makes documents for the companies to use as reference points. She has also been able to sit in on the approval process to see how companies defend their products and get them authorized.

Chelsea Mann '09 – editorial intern at Nation's Restaurant News.

With a "passion for journalism," Mann has held editorial internships before, but she says that getting to learn about the ins and outs of the restaurant industry is an added bonus. At Nation's Restaurant News, her duties include copy-editing, fact-checking and proofing pages, designing page layout, and composing headlines and captions, as well as writing for sections of NRN's print and online editions.

Stacey Klein '09 – assignment desk intern with CNBC

Klein says she's in the "hub of the newsroom," working with everyone at the outfit, from reporters and anchors to producers, editors, and photographers. She has also been on the production staff for CNBC's upcoming special "Made in China: The People's Republic of Profit," writing scripts and promos, choosing footage to include, giving her input in meetings and editing sessions, and even directing additional photo shoots and stepping in as the producer for three days when the main producer went on vacation.

Andrea DeSimone '10 – rehabilitation unit intern at White Plains Hospital

DeSimone, a neuroscience major who plans to attend medical school, participated in an eight-week "Pre-Career Practicum" at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. She interned on 4 South, an in-patient rehabilitation unit for those fighting alcohol and drug addictions. While at 4 South, DeSimone participated in therapy sessions on topics from drug and alcohol education to anger management, peer support and leisure activities, as well as attending daily staff meetings, weekly case conferences, and intervention group therapy.

Michael Moreno '11 - intern at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City

Moreno completed a 10-week program in the Patient Care/Quality Management Department at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City this summer. After shadowing Dr. I. Martin Levy at The Center for Orthopaedic Specialties at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx over winter break, Moreno decided to focus on the business aspect of medicine this summer by working in the office of Surgeon in Chief Dr. Thomas P. Sculco. The interns who work with the PC/QM team learn how to develop innovative ideas and efficient ways to improve hospital performance.

Fiona Kirkpatrick '10 – project leader at the Schoerke Foundation Heritage Academy

Kirkpatrick worked at the Heritage Academy, a co-educational primary school in Essiam, Ghana, supported by the Schoerke Foundation. She taught English and worked on reading and comprehension with small groups of students. In 2006, Kirkpatrick spent the summer working with the same school, which she says differs from most of the Ghanan educational system by emphasizing creativity and critical thought rather than taking a test-based approach. She hopes to return next summer, possibly with a group of Hamilton students.
