Randy Ericson, the Couper Librarian, accepted the Outstanding Project for 2007 award from the Communal Societies Association on behalf of Hamilton College. The award was presented at the CSA annual meeting on Sept. 29.

Hamilton received the award for the digitization of the Shaker periodical, variously titled The Shaker, Shaker and Shakeress, The Shaker Manifesto and The Manifesto. This publication ran from 1871 until 1899 and shared religious and political opinions between Shaker communities from Maine to Kentucky.

This digitization makes the college's collection of 349 issues (8,136 pages) of Shaker periodical literature held by its Rare Books and Special Collections freely available to the public, making the fragile and largely inaccessible body of literature available for everyone to use. The CSA praises Hamilton's project as "a landmark step in moving collections relating to communal societies into the digital realm" and "an example all other institutions would do well to emulate."
