Hamilton College president Joan Hinde Stewart was among eight college presidents featured in a cover article "Top of the Class" in The Good Life, Central New York Magazine in its March/April issue. The magazine, published six times a year by The Post-Standard (Syracuse) highlights eight women who head Central New York colleges and universities.
In responding to the question, "Would you recommend your job to young women coming up through the ranks?," Stewart said: "I can think of no occupation more varied, more challenging and more satisfying than mine. From as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be an educator. All my heroes were teachers. I count myself fortunate to be doing what I believe in deeply helping to guide the transformation of talented young people into future leaders and to be working toward that end with groups as dedicated and varied as faculty, parents, alumni, trustees and community neighbors, along with the students themselves."
Stewart, the first female president in Hamilton history, came to the college in 2003. Prior to that she was dean of liberal arts at the University of South Carolina from 1999 to 2003. A Brooklyn native and first-generation college graduate, Stewart is a French scholar.
Other college and university presidents included in the article were Nancy Cantor, Syracuse University; Rebecca Chopp, Colgate University, Lois DeFleur, Binghamton University; Lisa Marsh Ryerson, Wells College; Deborah Flemma Stanley, SUNY Oswego; Debbie Sydow, Onondaga Community College; and Peggy Williams, Ithaca College.
