Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart has announced the appointment of Monica C. Inzer as the college's next dean of admission and financial aid. The appointment is effective July 1.

Inzer is currently dean of undergraduate admission and student financial services at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. She is a native of Sherrill, where her parents still reside. In addition to having overall responsibility for Hamilton's student recruitment and financial aid efforts, Inzer will report to the president and serve as one of the college's eight senior officers.

"Monica is a person of enormous energy, creativity and conviction who works hard and sets high standards for herself and her peers," said Stewart. "People describe her as a team-builder, not just with her staff in the admission office, but also with faculty members and other campus constituencies."

"Hamilton is a premier liberal arts college with an outstanding reputation," Inzer said. "I feel fortunate and honored to have been chosen to lead Hamilton's admission efforts."

A graduate of Skidmore College, Inzer has served in her current position since May 2000. During that time, she provided strategic leadership for the offices of Undergraduate Admission, Admission Services and Student Financial Services.

Under Inzer's direction, Babson set records for applications and average SAT scores. She and her staff also lowered the acceptance rate, improved the gender balance of the entering class, and doubled the number of students of color enrolling at the business college. In each of the past three years, Babson's admission office achieved its enrollment goals (within two students) for both first-year and transfer students. Inzer also revamped many of the college's student recruitment vehicles, including e-mail and direct mail campaigns, primary and secondary print publications, and the Web site.

Prior to arriving at Babson, Inzer was associate director and then director of admissions at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., director of annual giving at Moses Brown School in Providence, R.I., director of the annual fund/associate director of development and director of financial aid/associate director of admissions at The Gunnery School in Washington, Conn., and assistant director of admissions at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Penna.

"After working at two niche schools (engineering and business), I'm excited to be returning to a liberal arts college." Inzer said. "The liberal arts are important to me from my own personal experience. I miss the diversity of experience and range of interests that students and faculty members celebrate in environments like Hamilton's."

The former Monica Barbano is a graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

"It's been almost 20 years since I left the area, and I do believe this is a homecoming of sorts." Inzer said. "My husband and I both grew up in small towns like Clinton, and we're looking forward to re-connecting with the area, raising our son near family, and living in a part of the country where the pace is a little slower and saner."
