The Irwin professorship supports the needs and interests of women at HamiltonCollege. It was established by Jane Irwin Droppa, a 1975 Kirkland Collegegraduate, in memory of her mother, and then transferred to Hamilton Collegewhen the two colleges joined in 1978.
In addition to teaching as an assistant professor of women's studies at theUniversity of Washington, Sunindyo has been a lecturer at the University ofWisconsin at Madison, where she earned her master's degree in 1984 and herPh.D. in 1993. Her Drs. degree was awarded in 1982 from the UniversitasIndonesia in Jakarta.
Much of Sunindyo's research and teaching centers on comparative women'smovements, race, class, sexuality and the social order. She has been therecipient of fellowships from the Association of American University WomenEducational Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the University of Wisconsin,and was nominated for a distinguished teaching award at the University ofWashington.
Her doctoral dissertation, "She Who Earns: The Politics of Prostitution inJava," is currently under review to be published in book form, and her poetryhas been published in several journals in her native Indonesia.
