The Hamilton College Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will present free spring concerts in Wellin Hall on the Hamilton campus this weekend. The orchestra concert is Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. and the jazz concert will be Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m.
Conducted by Heather Buchman, the orchestra's spring concert will feature a late Romantic period collaboration with soprano Janet Brown. Brown and the HCO will perform four orchestral songs by Richard Strauss. The songs ("Allerseelen," "Cäcilie," "Freundliche Vision," and "Befreit") were not published together as were his more familiar "Four Last Songs," but were initially published in separate collections for voice and piano before Strauss orchestrated them individually. Other works on the program include Mozart's Magic Flute Overture, and Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D minor.
Soprano Janet Brown has been praised by critics for her warm, clear voice and direct expression. Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe has called her "...one of our most treasurable artists." On the opera stage she has performed roles with the Syracuse Opera Company, Oswego Opera Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre. In concert she has performed the major oratorio roles with the Syracuse Symphony, the West Virginia Symphony, and the Cantata Singers of Boston, among others. Brown is also a frequent recitalist with the Skaneateles Chamber Music Festival and has appeared in concerts of new music with the Syracuse-based Society for New Music and Boston's Collage New Music.
In the Jazz Ensemble spring concert "Swing and Beyond," the ensemble will perform classic swing charts as well as ear-pleasing soul jazz and funk. The program will feature the premiere performance of new arrangements and a screening of related video clips from the Hamilton College Jazz Archive. This semester the ensemble is directed by Monk Rowe, The Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. For more information call the box office at 859-4331.
