Paul Alan Hagstrom, associate professor of economics and director of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, has been named to the board of directors of the Utica Mutual Insurance Company, principal member of the Utica National Insurance Group. Hagstrom assumes a post left vacant by Jacob Worner, who retired from the board in February.

Hagstrom holds master's and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since joining the Hamilton faculty in 1991, his teaching fields have included public finance and labor economics as well as the economics of poverty and wealth.

The Utica National Insurance Group is among the top 100 property/casualty insurance organizations in the United States and among the largest headquartered in New York state. The group's principal company, the Utica Mutual Insurance Company, was founded in 1914, and its life insurance affiliate, UticaLIFE, was founded in 1979. Utica National sells commercial and personal lines insurance products through 1,300 independent agents. Included among its specialties are products for printers, schools, volunteer fire departments, religious institutions, and a national program of professional liability coverage for insurance agents.
