Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal, a former child soldier on the front lines of combat in war-torn Sudan, will give a lecture on Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Hamilton College Chapel. Jal is the seventh guest in The Voices of Color Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Jal, a rising star of African hip-hop, begins his story in Sudan during what has become one of history's most brutal civil wars. At no more than six-years-old, Jal was sent away to become a rebel fighter for the Sudan People's Liberation Army, armed with a machine gun taller than he. The documentary "War Child," which won the Tribeca Film Festival Cadillac Audience Award, presents Jal's story in the context of Sudan's tormented modern history of civil war, following Jal from child soldier to rap star.

Jal is the founder of Gua Africa, a nonprofit organization focused on sustainable development in Sub Saharan Africa. Jal's first book, War Child: A Child Soldier's Story, (February 2009, St. Martin's Press), has been called "Quietly stirring" by The New York Times.

The C. Christine Johnson Voices of Color Lecture Series (VLCS) was created to recognize Hamilton College's commitment to cultural diversity. The series sponsors one influential leader of color per year, with backgrounds ranging from artists to activists. For more information about this event, please email vcls@hamilton.edu.
