Students in Susan Mason's Principles of Instructional Communication class and other Education Studies classes have undertaken a unique project to help K-12 students in Mississippi and Louisiana displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The Katrina School Supplies Project collected school supplies and monetary donations which were given to Sacred Heart Elementary School in Hattiesburg, Miss., so the students will have the pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, glue and other materials they need when school resumes.

Sacred Heart has about 80 students. The Project collected seven full boxes of supplies and raised more than $300, which will go toward purchasing textbooks. The supplies were mailed on Oct. 11, and Global Shipping in Utica donated the cost of shipping. Sacred Heart students sent to Hamilton a DVD they made of themselves talking about their experiences, and Hamilton students hope to remain in contact with the children. Hamilton students are also working to set up a pen-pal experience between Sacred Heart and Clinton Central School students of the same age.
