Sarah Morrison-Smith.

Assistant Professor of Computer Science Sarah Morrison-Smith was recently featured in the “Expert Advice” column on TechGuide. In the Q&A column, Morrison-Smith answered questions about how she became interested in computer science and how computer science as a major is more than just learning to code.

She said that “even students in other majors could benefit from taking a computer science course or two - especially if they are in a data driven field like chemistry, biology, or psychology,” and  noted that as the sciences become more data driven, “any STEM field is going to pair well with computer science.”

Pointing out that computer science is also beneficial in other fields, such as finance and economics, writing, and digital arts, Morrison-Smith said that “any student who can fit it into their schedule would benefit from taking at least one computer science class.”
