Shelley Haley, the Edward North Chair of Classics and professor of Classics and Africana Studies, was recently elected president-elect of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) for 2020. Her term begins in January. She will serve as president in 2021, and then as immediate past-president in 2022.
According to the SCS website, the organization was founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association. It is “the principal learned society in North America for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and civilizations.” Today, SCS membership includes more than 3,000 individuals, along with more than 200 libraries and 50 classics department.
